2012 | Weekend with Mallory

malloryjjThe last week in April, I got a call from my brother.  He had decided to take his wife on a fun little train trip for their anniversary, but they needed someone to take care of little Mallory. Of course, I was delighted to do it for them.  A few days later, Cody and Becki and Mallory spent the night at our house and then in the wee hours the next morning, they left on their adventure.

Having a 2-year-old around the house was an adventure as well, but one that I enjoyed so much. It made me miss having a toddler pretty bad. I enjoyed getting to know Mallory more and we had a great time.

After getting the kids off to school Friday morning, Mallory and I had the house to ourselves. We watched a bit of tv, ate some breakfast, and ran some errands. And of course we had to hit the park for a little while. Mallory adores swinging on the swings at the park!  We did a little grocery shopping and visited Uncle Joey at work for a bit.  We had lunch and then I got to sing to Mal and we both had a bit of a nap before my kids got home from school.  JJ adores his cousin and he loved coming home and getting to play with her. I swear he is the only one who can make her laugh so hard. I always love to see the special relationship that Mallory has with JJ. We ended up going to the little park in our trailer community for some playing too.  Then of course we had to watch “Meet the Robinsons, ” which I’m pretty sure is Mal’s favorite movie. It was darling to see her giggle and enjoy it. We had Chili for dinner which Mal just gobbled right down.  After getting my kids to bed, it was a bit of an adventure trying to get Mallory to go to sleep.  She was missing her parents pretty bad. I sang to her and we watched part of Meet the Robinsons yet again. We hit a snag, where she kept asking me to sing, “the dog song.” I couldn’t figure it out, so I ended up calling Becki, where I was informed that she was saying “duck” not “dog.” So once we solved that mystery…we sang “5 Little Ducks went out to play” and she calmed right down. I thought she would sleep with me, but for some reason she really didn’t want to sleep in my room, so she ended up sleeping on the air mattress. Once she got to sleep, she slept all night.

On Saturday, we went to the park again and Mallory loved swinging. We came home and had Mac & Cheese for lunch. We played and played and played.  The kids loved playing outside with Mal.  We also finally got Mallory to take a little nap before her Aunt Ashley came over to take her for a little while. I spent some time with my own kids and we had dinner and cleaned up before Mallory came back to us.  After getting my kids showered and off to bed, it was some special one-on-one time for Mallory and I (Joey had gone to a movie with a friend.). This was probably my favorite couple of hours that I had with Mallory the whole weekend. We watched some tv, sang some songs, and I finally felt like we really connected. We started actually having a conversation and giggling and snuggling. She would not go to sleep, but I was enjoying her too much to really make it happen. I was kind of sorry to hear the knock on the door and see Cody and Becki arrive back. I had been having so much fun with my niece. But Mallory was so glad to see her parents and she just wouldn’t let go of them.  It was fun to visit with Cody and Becki for awhile. Joey came home soon after they did, and we all stayed up and talked for awhile, before all heading to bed.

It was such a fun weekend with Mallory!

The kids were excited to go back to school today. They love wearing their warm coats and boots to school – having snow is exciting.

The kids were so excited to start our Countdown to Christmas Advent Calendar. I created a new one this year and was so happy with how it turned out. I used a shoe organizer (that has exactly 24 holes – how perfect is that) – and created some date pages to put on the outside and used some fancy clothespins. In each hole – is a card with an activity on it! Today’s activity was to decorate the tree – so we brought the tree in and decorated while listening to Christmas music.

Today’s activity was to drink hot chocolate by the tree. The kids thought it was so much fun!

I was so excited for tonight’s activity. The kids got home from school and were surprised to see Cody, Becki and Mallory there. I had them read the card in our advent calendar – and surprise – we are heading on vacation to Eden with Cody and Becki! They were thrilled to be able to go back to our “vacation home”! So a few hours later, we arrived at Worldmark. We were able to get a 3-bedroom condo this time and it was fancy! We loved it! So we all settled in – decorated our little tree – went grocery shopping, and ate pizza for dinner. We are all so excited to have this special time together.

It was such a fun day. We did crafts, played the wii, played some card games, ate great food, and just had such a great time relaxing and enjoying being together. We topped the night off by heading to Eden’s Town Tree Lighting where the kids got to see Santa!

We are having such a lovely time and we are thinking of making this a yearly tradition! It was Mallory’s very first birthday today and we are so happy that we were able to celebrate with her. We had cupcakes and dinner and present opening! The kids watched Christmas movies all day and just another great day of being together! Happy Birthday Mallory – we love you!

We spent lots of time getting things ready for the Halloween parties at school tomorrow. I’m in charge of JJ’s class party and I had a lot of fun creating these fun treats!

The kids had their Halloween at school today, beginning with their little parade! We got to hear JJ’s class do their monthly song time for us too. And JJ’s class party went really well and I think they all had a great time. We finally got around to carving our pumpkins tonight and since Joey was gone to do his podcast – I did the carving. I was actually proud of how they turned out. JJ’s pumpkin was Jack from Nightmare before Christmas and its my favorite ever pumpkin! Beth’s was a girly vampire pumpkin! The kids wouldn’t touch all the gooey stuff so basically I did all the work but they were thrilled anyways!

What a day. It started with taking Beth to sign-up for Girls Scouts. When we came home, Joey had all the kids bedroom torn apart. Their stuff was everywhere and they were pulling up the floor to replace it. We have had horrible constant leaking problems that we just can’t seem to get rid of. Joey and Aaron spent all day replacing the floor and I spent the rest of the night putting the bedroom back together. It’s not perfect, but its better than it was. I was so sick and because of all the fixing going on and the kids having colds too – we just decided not to do trick-or-treating this year. They had lots of candy still and so it worked out.

Cody, Becki and Mallory came over for Halloween Dinner. We had Mummy Dogs (hot dogs wrapped in biscuit dough) and Bat Wings (Mac & Cheese made with bow tie pasta) and Dirt Dessert. It was delicious and it was fun to hang out with Cody and his family. Mallory was a hoot and its been so fun seeing her grow up. She was dancing to Beth’s Pony Castle music and making my kids laugh so hard!

The kids have really enjoyed the light sabers that we got at the Fall Festival. I love their creative play. They built a fort with blankets and pillows and play fought all afternoon after they got home from school.

I have been sick with a bad cold this week and my bedroom shows it. I’ve got the humidifier going and been eating soup. Beth had a touch of a cold today and so she didn’t go to school and unfortunately she missed her last soccer game of the Fall season. 🙁

JJ’s class is doing a special thing every month. At the last day of the month, the parents are invited to go to their classroom and hear the songs that the kids have learned that month. So today, I was able to go listen to JJ and it was so fun to hear him sing and enjoy being with his class. We also got to babysit Mallory all late afternoon/evening and it was so fun to have her cute little spirit in our home!

Today was Parent Day in Beth’s class and she was so excited to have her Daddy come to her school! They had a fun afternoon and then Dad brought both JJ and Beth home. I love seeing Joey with the kids!

Today was another pajama day for the Smith Family. We just hung around the house and listened to General Conference and being lazy today. After conference, we headed to the movie theater and watched Legends of the Guardians (The Owls of Ga’hoole). It was very cute and the kids loved it! I also hosted our Birthday Bash 6 Celebration Crop @ Digitals today and it was a great time!

Today’s photo says it all. It has just been a rough season so far for our Colts! Here’s hoping they start making it happen! Today was General Conference and I really enjoyed hearing from the leaders of the Church, especially from President Monson!

JJ got to go to Krispy Kreme today for Scouts and they got fun hats and got to watch the doughnuts being made. Beth had another soccer game. She’s having fun, but we wish she would be a bit more competitive and not give up so much.

We were excited to go to Cody, Becki and Mallory’s for dinner tonight. Joey was invited to the Casseta’s for the Colts game, so he didn’t join us. We had a yummy dinner and a great visit! And the Colts won tonight!

Life 365 | Week 30

I don’t know if it is just that its hot or what, but I really haven’t wanted to cook lately. I usually don’t mind the cooking (but I do HATE HATE HATE the cleaning up part). Joey will be working really late all week as they have a project deadline and they will be getting dinner brought into work each night, so I won’t have to feed him this week. So today, I just decided we were going to have McDonalds for dinner and the kids were so excited to get a happy meal!

The best part about summer is getting wet! And the kids enjoyed over an hour of sprinkler fun in the yard today! I just love seeing those big smiles on their faces.

I had a bad case of indigestion/heartburn today. I couldn’t even drag myself out of bed. I even had to cancel my crop and it was just a bad day. I was able to get up a few times and actually feed the kids, but mostly they were on their own today. Moms should never be sick. Anyways, what better thing to occupy your kids for the day than play dough! I got it out with the cookie cutters and it lasted them all afternoon. I’m very grateful for independent children today!

My friend Amber on her blog today referenced education.com and I am so glad she did. Now that the kids don’t have school/camp – I have not been doing so good with entertaining them. But this is a wonderful site that has so many fun learning activities to do! We have decided to make a goal to do at least one of them daily and it will help starve the boredom and make me feel like my kids are actually learning something and staying active for the rest of the summer! Today we read the story “The Boy who cried Wolf” and talked about honesty. Then we played a little game that they had that went with the story. It was a lot like Red Light, Green Light but we created some number cards and they had to use the numbers and also reading to see what they had to do. The kids had a blast and since Joey actually got home early tonight he got to play a round with us too! Joey also got our automatic sprinklers fixed tonight so no more having to drag the hose around – yay!

We got to tend cutie patootie Mallory again today and it is just such a delight. She’s getting so big and the kids love playing with her. It was the kind of day where we didn’t have to go anywhere – so we didn’t even get out of our pjs today – okay maybe that was just me. Yep, the kids got dressed, but I stayed in my pjs all day and loved every minute of it!

Today, we celebrated the 24th by attending the Pioneer Day Extravangaza in Provo. We toured the Pioneer Village and listened to stories, they had all kinds of fun activities for the kids from pony rides to making your own butter. The kids loved making harmonicas out of popsicle sticks and creating their own dreamcatchers out of paper plates. We had lunch at McDonalds and the kids got to wear themselves out playing on the playground. It was a fun day and nice to get out of the house for awhile!

Sunday, July 25, 2010
jul25

Last night we hung the kids’ dreamcatchers up that they had made yesterday and told them how they would catch their bad dreams. This morning Beth told her daddy that she didn’t remember any dreams, so the dreamcatcher must have “accidentally took her good dreams” too!

We had church and then we had “magic ravioli” for dinner along with watching Matilda for the first time!
