Family History TuesdayZ | Hospitalizations/Surgeries

Journal prompt: Have you ever been hospitalized or had surgery? What were the circumstances?

Journal prompt: Have you ever been hospitalized or had surgery? What were the circumstances?Journal prompt: Have you ever been hospitalized or had surgery? What were the circumstances?

My Journaling:
My first surgery occurred 8 months after I was married. We had struggled with “relations” and we finally discovered the reason. I had a tennis-ball sized cyst in my most private of areas. Thank goodness it was benign and it was removed in an out-patient surgery. I was sore for awhile, but the recovery wasn’t too bad.

My next surgery occurred in 2005 – three weeks after my Bethie was born. JJ, Beth and I were living with Joey’s parents, while he worked away from home. Joey had been able to spend a week with us after Beth was born, but had gone back to work. We had already blessed Beth in church and we were just getting into a routine. I remember nursing Beth and getting both kids to sleep at about midnight. I had started not feeling really well and was up most of the night. The pain got worse and worse and I started throwing up. I thought for sure I had some kind of flu. When it was morning I took JJ upstairs and asked my mother-in-law if she could watch him for the day. Then I spent the rest of the day hovering in pain between the bedroom and the bathroom. I was definitely grateful that Beth was a newborn and just slept most of the time. I did nurse her when she needed it. Finally about 6pm, Joey’s mom came downstairs and said that she thought it might be my appendix. I couldn’t believe it because I had always heard that with the appendix, it hurt on the right side. I hurt clear across my stomach and back. But the pain was so bad that I didn’t complain when she hauled me and the kids into her car to head into town to the hospital. In the ER, I finally found relief when they ushered in pain meds into an iv line. After lots of tests, they confirmed my mother-in-law’s suspicions – that my appendix needed to come out. I sent the kids home for the night with my mother-in-law and was alone in the hospital. As I waited for surgery (an accident came in and they had to delay my surgery for several hours) – waves of emotion swept over me. I felt bad that I was leaving the kids with my mother-in-law alone and that she was going to have to deal with a newborn who wouldn’t take a bottle. I felt scared about having surgery and just felt so alone. I talked to Joey on the phone and even though he wanted him there terribly – I felt like he should stay at work. I was just so grateful that I was finally not feeling the pain – thanks to the meds. But I was tired and emotional and I was sore from not being able to nurse. FINALLY, I was taken into surgery. Everything went well and I woke up the following morning to another room and my husband waiting for me. He had disregarded my worries and came anyway. I was so grateful. I guess I had other visitors (my cousin and his family) when I was still coming out of anesthesia but I don’t remember it. I guess I was pretty silly under the meds and said some pretty funny stuff (none of which I remember). My parents ended up visiting as well. The worst part was not being able to nurse and not seeing my kids. I did pump and that helped. I remember having an awful nurse. My arm started hurting so badly and it turned out that the iv had gotten plugged. They had to move the iv to the other side and it took the nurse several tries before finally getting it in. I coudn’t even move my arm for awhile after that. It was such a relief to finally leave the hospital and come home to my children. My amazing mother-in-law had taken such good care of them – but my little baby was very happy to finally get to nurse. I actually was able to bounce back pretty fast and life went on.

My next and hopefully my last surgery occurred the week before Thanksgiving in 2011. I started having troubles a couple of months before that. I wasn’t digesting food well and it didn’t matter what I ate – I was always in pain. I lost about 20 pounds (which wasn’t a bad thing) – when Joey finally got me to go to the doctor. After several testing throughout a couple of weeks – they decided that my gallbladder had to come out. It was an easier surgery – I was in and out within a few hours, but boy was the recovery painful. I was sore for a few weeks. Life without a gallbladder has its ups and downs, but its nice to know that 2 of the organs that our body does not necessarily need are gone and I won’t have to go through that again!

My 2 other hospitalizations were the birth of my children.

Family History TuesdayZEach Tuesday, I am going to be offering prompts or ideas. If you don’t write in your journal regularly – I am going to encourage you to write just ONCE A WEEK and answer the question/idea that I give on Tuesdays. These ideas hopefully will spark a memory and you will be able to capture that in what you write/record so that it can be left for your children/grandchildren/family/friends. Give as much detail as you can when answering.

Will you do this for me? Will you do this for your families? You can write it down in a journal, you can type it up on a computer or journaling software, you can take a recorder and talk, you can videotape your answers, you can even scrap a page with the journaling. It doesn’t matter how you do this – it’s just important that you do it. The memories, the dates, the information is the only real thing we can leave to our families when we are gone.

apr19Late last night I discovered that Persnickety Prints was just up the street and I had an awesome email conversation with the owner. So I prepared several of my layouts to test drive their service and sent it over early this morning. Today’s photo was actually taken on Wednesday, when I picked the layouts up. They are so awesome! Its so exciting to see my work actually printed! I’ve made it a new goal to get a few more pages done each week. JJ and Beth have been getting after me to get more pages done because they love to look through the albums and see pictures of themselves!

apr20I spent all morning and early afternoon in Riverton with JJ. We went to see a Rheumatologist about some weird bumps on JJ’s big toes. It turns out that everything is okay – they are actually callouses that JJ has developed by curling his toes when he is walking with his shoes on. We are going to have to see what to do about that – but everything is okay. When we finally got back to Orem, I dropped JJ off for the last couple hours of school and picked up Beth from Cody and Becki’s. Beth cried and sulked because she didn’t want to leave – she was having way too much fun with Uncle Cody and Aunt Becki. But I finally got her cheered up by letting her have a tea party on the kitchen table with some of her animal friends!

apr21Beth was so excited because today was Daddy & Doughnuts Day. We curled Beth’s hair all pretty for her date with Dad. Joey spent the last half hour of school with Beth, visiting and eating doughnuts. Beth made her daddy a colored tie to wear too. They were so happy to spend some time together!

Thursday, April 22, 2010
apr22Poor Bethie had to get shots today. We went in for her 5-year-old/getting ready for Kindergarten appointment. Beth was so sad and sore the rest of the day. She wouldn’t take a nap but she obviously wasn’t feeling well because she wouldn’t even move off of the couch and that is just not like my Bethie girl. For a few hours her legs stiffened up so bad that I had to carry her around, even to use the bathroom. But finally when her daddy came home – she was feeling pretty good.

apr23Spring weather is so much fun! We even got out the popsicles today! The kids loved it and they were so cute sitting in the same chair and watching a movie together. Have I said how much I love it when they get along? We also made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies today!

Saturday, April 24, 2010
apr24We had a Primary activity this morning at the church, so JJ, Beth and I went and learned about some of the prophets in the Bible, while Daddy went and helped Clark with his computer. After we returned home, we packed up a picnic and headed to Liberty Park in Salt Lake City for lunch and fun with the Mortensens! It was fun to relax and enjoy the spring weather – even though their were tons of people at the park today. We played some frisbee and football, played on the playground, and the kids enjoyed playing with Curtis and Anne’s kids and their new puppy. The kids played so hard that when we got home – we all took a long nap!

apr25I had procrastinated getting ready for my new calling – so I stayed up very late (like 4 in the morning) and finished up some fun things for the kids to hold while we had singing time. Thank goodness Joey helped me or I don’t think we would have gotten any sleep. But I think it was worth it. The Sunbeam singing time went great and I’m a lot less nervous about it now!

For our Family Movie Night tonight we watched Batteries not Included and made mini pizzas (our flying saucers) for dinner! The kids loved being able to put the toppings on themselves! Another movie night success!

And here is my weekly layout:
week17I used my The Story of Our Lives (Digitals NSD Challenge Kit Contribution) & Digital 365 to create this layout!

We got a light dusting of snow today. Looks like Winter isn’t quite done yet. We are supposed to be getting more snow in the next couple of days too – so even though it melted a lot today, I think we will definitely be getting more. I actually love snow and rain. It washes over the world and gives us a new start.

It was time for JJ’s yearly checkup. I still can’t believe he’s 7! We really like Dr. Cornish. He is very through and always has great suggestions on things we can do to help JJ in his development. JJ is growing right on schedule – 50.6 lbs and 3′ 11″. And in comparison to last year’s checkup – his development has really showed lots of improvement! So a very good visit with the doctor today!

feb11Wednesday nights for me are spent in the Digitals Chatroom. For about 2 years, I have hosted the OVER THE HUMP Chat and I have really enjoyed getting to know the members of the Digitals community. Not only has it helped my sales – but I have truly gained FRIENDS. I love all the different challenges that we have had and it is always just fun! I love my online friends and the chats truly help me feel connected with them and the members are always amazing to my ego! They are always make me feel good about myself and my creations and I’m always so overwhelmed by their generosity. Thank you FRIENDS! You made my day!

Last night, I had a nightmare about my Dad dying. It was so awful. I woke up crying. It was one of those dreams that just felt so real. I am such a daddy’s girl. I just can’t imagine having to live on this earth without him. I know that eventually that I will have to happen – but I really want it to be YEARS AND YEARS away. The dream has stayed with me all day. I love being with my dad. I love watching movies with him. I love listening in when he tells stories, especially those about our family’s history. Now that I live 5 hours away from my hometown – I don’t get to be with Dad and Mom much and I miss them. This dream has really affected me. I need to capture all the stories and memories. I need to spend more time with Dad. I hope he knows how much I love him….

Today was Beth’s Valentine’s Day Party at School. Her very first Valentine’s Party! She loved it. She was so excited! We got some simple Disney Princess Valentines (since I just didn’t get the time to make some handmade ones) and I made some more of the Red Velvet Heart Cookies to take to her class. She came home with lots of treats and was so excited about the envelope they made out of paper plates! I’m so glad she had fun!

Today was JJ’s Valentine’s Day Party at School. We got him some Cars Valentines and it was exciting to watch him sign his name to them HIMSELF. I really treasured watching him write his name. I love it when I can see such improvement in his skills. I think JJ is helping me to appreciate the little things more. JJ had a fun envelope filled with Valentines when he got home, but unfortunately he had a bit of a bad day. He got hit in the head by a door and he had some bad behavior at school. I think the party was just a little too much for him today. But he did love all the candy. 🙂

Joey and I celebrated our 11th Valentine’s Day today! Our first date was February 6, 1998 and we celebrated our 1st Valentine’s Day shortly after that and have been together ever since. I want Joey to know how very much I love him!

JJ was sick with a cold, but we were able to get Joey’s brother Aaron to come babysit for us anyway. We went to a movie (Coraline) and to dinner (Olive Garden) with Curtis and Anne. We had a great time visiting and enjoying being together! Thanks guys for a great night!

JJ had a pretty rough night – coughing and fever. I hate it when my kids are sick. 🙁 We had Stake Conference for Church today and since JJ was sick, Joey stayed home with the kids. I had the opportunity to sing in the Stake Choir, so I went to conference. I really enjoyed the spirit of the songs that we were able to sing and it has really been neat to be a part of our ward choir.

The kids really love making “tents” out of their blankets and pillows. JJ made this tent for his sister and I thought it was pretty great!’
