Primary Sharing Time | Covenant Keepers

I know this is last minute, but I thought I would share my plan for tomorrow’s Primary Sharing Time (I serve as second counselor in my ward’s Primary Presidency.) Hopefully in the future, I can maybe share some lesson plans here on my blog ahead of time! I hope you can use this.

This year in my Primary, we are using the monthly CTR Challenges from The Friend Magazine. The CTR Story, Cracking the Code, in the current issue really touched my heart and I wanted to share it with my Primary kids, so I based my whole sharing time lesson on it.

COVENANT KEEPERS

PREPARATION:

  • Read Mosiah 18:10 and Ezekiel 44:14, the CTR Story, and the following points in the lesson.
  • You will need to print and cut-out a CK 24/7 Shield for each of the children.
  • During the welcome/opening and/or music time, you will need to observe the children in your Primary and find a few children that are showing kindness, reverence, compassion, obedience, or any other covenants/commandments/principles that you can pick out and share in the lesson.
  • On the chalkboard, draw blank lines representing the letters in the words, COVENANT KEEPERS.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _    _ _ _ _ _ _ _

LESSON:

  • Hand each child a CK 24/7 Shield and ask them: “Can you crack this code? What do you think it means?” Give them a moment to think about it.
  • Show the kids the blank lines on the board. Tell them the first word can be found in Mosiah 18:10 and the second word can be found in Ezekiel 44:14. (For Jr. Primary, have a leader/older child read the verses out loud and have the children raise their hands if they think they know the word. For Sr. Primary, have them read the verses in groups and see which group can crack the code first!) Then explain what 24/7 means (all day, every day). Fill out the lines on the chalkboard when they crack the code!
  • Discuss what a covenant is (A two-way promise between a person and Heavenly Father).
  • Discuss baptism and how it is one of the first covenants that we make.
  • Share with the children that you were spying on them and you noticed a few times that the children kept their covenants and/or were examples of specific principles of the gospel. Share your observations. (Example: Jimmy was REVERENT and really listened, as Sarah gave her talk in Primary.)
  • Point out that we keep our covenants every day, when we show love and take care of each other the way Jesus would. After we are baptized, we will have specific promises to keep (to take upon you the name of Jesus Christ, to always remember Him, and to obey His commandments) and we can work each day on fulfilling those promises. But even before we are baptized, we can choose the right and keep the commandments and then the Holy Ghost can be with us to help us. As we keep our promises and strive each day to be covenant keepers, we will be training our minds and our hearts how to understand the Spirit and how to make the right choices. This helps us be prepared to go to the temple, where we can learn to make new covenants. And when we do all this, we will get stronger and stronger, each day that we keep our covenants.
  • End with your testimony.

2017 Primary Theme | Choose the Right

2017 PRIMARY | Choose the Right
So if you are LDS and happen to be in a Primary Presidency,
I have a freebie for you today and additional files for purchase!

I AM a part of my ward’s Primary Presidency and I’m so excited about these posters that I created for the upcoming new year! This is my third year preparing for the Primary and I didn’t think I could top last year’s, but I really like this year’s too!

If you are in the Primary, you know that each month we have monthly themes that go along with the yearly theme, plus monthly scriptures. Many wards, including my own, like to display posters with the month’s theme on it!

We love the big 16×20 posters but I also have 8×10 posters if that is easier for your Primary room! We actually use the big posters in our Primary room and the smaller posters on a bulletin board in the foyer of our church! The files are large because of the high quality .jpg files! I am also including .pdf files, in case that is better for you.

I also have a couple other files available to purchase.

The first one, is the same files as the freebie downloads, EXCEPT that the images are not there and you can customize the posters with your choice of imagery!

PURCHASE

And I’m excited to offer you an additional resource to your Primary. My primary will be using the Friend’s CTR Challenge each month and adding on to that – I have created a couple of other posters as well as some fun Boy and Girl Armor of God/Shield of Faith Characters that we will be using throughout the year to support the theme!
PURCHASE

I really hope you can use them!
I would really love to hear what you think!

Light the World | 25 Days in 25 Ways

Each year as I prepare for the Christmas season and I plan my family’s December Activities, I am always searching for new ways to focus on the Savior and the true meaning of the season. Amidst all the fun, holiday-themed activities, I feel it is really important for my family to remember Jesus Christ and his story and how we can become more like him.

As I have been preparing for the holidays this year, I was so happy and excited to discover a wonderful campaign that my church has initiated,
light-the-world-logo-watermark-red-01I was thrilled to find so much ideas and inspiration about following our Savior, Jesus Christ in December. I also discovered many other sites that have built upon this idea and I am so excited that there are so many resources, starting with mormon.org and HERE!

“As we follow the example of the Savior and live as He lived and as He taught,
that light will burn within us and will light the way for others.”

–President Thomas S. Monson

One of my family’s traditions each year is an activity advent calendar, where each day in December we do some kind of holiday activity. I love my beautiful shadowbox advent calendar that I purchased a few years ago and it’s always so fun to plan and add the activities to the boxes for my kids to discover! So after looking through all the different resources, I narrowed down the things that I wanted to do and began creating my own little cards to stick into my boxes. I mostly used ideas from Brightly Street.

adventshadowbox

I decided that I wanted to share these cards with you so that you can use them too!  So what I have done is created 2.5 x 2.5 cards with each day’s theme, song, scriptures, video links, and activity idea. (I’ve also included blanks – so that you can add your own stuff). You can download the pdf and print them out and use them in whatever advent calendar you have! Personally, I will also be adding the regular holiday-themed activities that my family does to the back of the card, so we can do them as well as the #LIGHTtheWORLD activities.

I hope that you all will participate in this wonderful initiative and I really hope that you can use what I have created. Don’t forget to check out all the other resources that others have created! Find what works best for you and your family and serve! I know if we all participate, we can truly bless this world by serving those around us and fill our hearts with the peace that Jesus Christ can bring to each one of us.

Life 2014 | First Temple Trip

In my church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), we have sacred ordinances that we do in temples. When a young man or woman reaches the age of 12, they have the opportunity (if they live worthily), to attend the temple and do an ordinance that we call, Baptisms for the Dead. This ordinance gives people who have died the opportunity to be baptized and receive the gospel on the other side. This is the only ordinance in the temple that the youth can participate in. Once they are older (usually after the age of 18), they are able to go through the temple for other ordinances.

My son turned 12 in January and received the Aaronic Priesthood in February.  This gave him the opportunity to go on his first temple trip with the Young Men in March. With JJ being on the Autism Spectrum, we are always concerned with his ability to understand and to mentally be prepared for things. I am probably too protective of him, but I was really nervous about him receiving the priesthood. So far though, it has been a good experience for him. He is passing the sacrament at church and the other boys are helping him (especially a young man named Aaron Mellor – who we are so grateful for). JJ is high function, but communication is an issue a lot and sometimes, I just wish I could see inside his head so I could understand where he is coming from.  We didn’t talk much about the temple trip, but from what he said, I felt like it was a good experience for him and that he felt the spirit. It can be overwhelming, I remember it was for me, my first time. But I hope he will remember it and treasure these experiences.

Family History TuesdayZ | I Couldn’t Live Without…

Journal Prompt: I couldn't live without...

Journal Prompt: I couldn’t live without…Journal Prompt: I couldn't live without...

My Journaling:
I couldn’t live without the gospel. I’m so blessed to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and to have a testimony that it’s true. To know that I have a Heavenly Father and an older brother Jesus Christ, who hear me and understand me and are always there for me. To know that my family can be together forever.  These truths are so important to me and make up a huge part of my belief system. Without that, I don’t know how I could survive.

Family History TuesdayZEach Tuesday, I am going to be offering prompts or ideas. If you don’t write in your journal regularly – I am going to encourage you to write just ONCE A WEEK and answer the question/idea that I give on Tuesdays. These ideas hopefully will spark a memory and you will be able to capture that in what you write/record so that it can be left for your children/grandchildren/family/friends. Give as much detail as you can when answering.

Will you do this for me? Will you do this for your families? You can write it down in a journal, you can type it up on a computer or journaling software, you can take a recorder and talk, you can videotape your answers, you can even scrap a page with the journaling. It doesn’t matter how you do this – it’s just important that you do it. The memories, the dates, the information is the only real thing we can leave to our families when we are gone.
