moving cows

Project 365 | Week 24

Monday, June 8, 2009
jun8After more working on the truck – we gathered a load of cows. We branded them and got a load sent off to Sink Valley. JJ got to go on the truck with Uncle Clint and Grandpa and Beth stayed with me so we could go gather more cows. She was so excited to finally be riding a horse! I can’t believe that at her age, I was riding horses by myself. I feel kind of sad, that my kids don’t get to do that – except for once or twice a year, but I guess that’s just how it goes. The kids enjoyed playing in the dirt, riding horses, and riding Austin’s mini-bike today!

jun9I enjoyed taking pictures of the kids today, in between my branding duties. My brother, Clint had branded my name into the fence in 2005 (the year Beth was born) and today he added JJ and Beth’s names to the fence. The kids got a real kick out of it, especially JJ. He was so proud! Once again, JJ got to go on the truck to Sink Valley and Beth stayed with me.

We had an extra fun night – Bruce Harris came out with his trailer and generator (his son, Blair and grandson, Stetson was already out here with us). He cooked us some amazing BBQ Chicken and Rice Pudding. And then while the kids were doing their thing – smores, games, talking – we played a game of Trivia Pursuit! I did awful – but I had a great time and I think I even learned some stuff. Beth was exhausted and went right to sleep and since JJ was on the truck – I could just enjoy being with my mom, my sister, and Blair and Bruce! We had a good time.

jun10For as long as I can remember, my part of branding has been to vaccinate and to track the number of cows. The vaccination guns and the tracking systems have changed through the years (for the better), but I have always had this job. Occasionally, I have tied some calves, but I pretty much stay behind the scenes and that is really how I live my life. I like it that way. Not out in the spotlight – not the one really doing the heavy work – but the one giving support and keeping everything running smoothly.

Today….another load of cows off to Sink Valley (with JJ going on the truck again), another horse ride with Beth (she fell asleep on the horse for awhile), more visits with Kori, and more photo taking.

jun11“The last cup of hot chocolate and the last bale of Hay.” That’s what my Dad said this morning as we were branding the calves. I thought it sounded like the perfect title to a scrapbook page! Today is the last day at Bull Rush for this year. We packed and cleaned up camp, branded the last 4 calves (the biggest ones this year), and took lots of photos. Kori and some of Colby’s friend’s that came headed home. Colby and Clint took off hiking for awhile why Grandpa once again tinkered with his truck. When it was finally time to go – we loaded the cows and the horses and then we headed. As I took photos of the Peterbilt leaving camp (from the back of the white truck) – I felt kind of sad it was over. It seemed to go really fast this year. I didn’t really ride horses as much and it just wasn’t quite the same this year for some reason. But I’m still glad that my kids get to do this and I can only hope that this family tradition and way of life continues!

jun12It was a slow, lazy day. The kids played outside all day and I played on my computer. Staying in my Grandpa and Grandma’s House just brings back so many memories of my grandparents. I really miss them. Looking out the front door, I see my Grandma’s beautiful peace roses. I couldn’t help but take several photos of them and this one is my favorite!

jun13We were so excited to see Joey this morning! It was a long week without him! We were able to go up to Sink Valley and help my Dad and it was fun for Joey and I to ride horses together. The kids love it at the ranch. So much space to just run and play – they especially loved Daddy pushing them in the tire swing!

jun14We had a great week, but it was so nice to drive in and see the #13 on our trailer. HOME. We just relaxed today and I took a long nap. The kids were so excited to see their room and their toys!

Project 365 | Week 23

Lately, the kids have been taking showers instead of baths. It is just faster and usually by that time at night, I just want to get them in bed. But they really do love to play in the bathtub. They will beg to stay in “just a few more minutes.” And they love to see how wrinkly their hands get. They think it is just so cool how they get wrinkly hands and then it goes away!

I love the Rain. I love cloudy days. I love the coolness of the air and the feeling of just wanting to be home and relaxing. Today was one of those days. The kids and I spent some time outside in the rain and we took some fun photos. The kids loved hearing the thunder and it was just fun. I had always wanted to take a photo with rain against the window – but my point-and-shoot camera would never take a good one – I was excited to play with my DSLR today and get some fun shots!

I LOVE cheese fries and The Training Table has the best cheese fries with their awesome fry sauce (Hickory sauce and mayo). I was craving it today so since Joey got home early from work we went out to eat. YUMMY!

It was time for summer haircuts! JJ had been needing one for a long time, but I just never got it done. But today we used a coupon and went and got it done. Beth got a couple inches off her hair too and I think they look really great!

We are leaving today to head down south. Laundry, Cleaning, and Packing has filled my day! This little trip happens every year in the first part of June. We go out to the Arizona Strip to help my Dad (Grandpa) move the cows to Sink Valley (or ranch). I have always loved this time of year. It’s a time of hard work, but laughter and being with the family. It’s a “time out” from the world. No electricity, no internet access, no tv…..a time of unplugging and just being together as a family for a whole week. I’m kind of having a hard time going this year – but, I think it’s just because Joey isn’t able to come with us. He is taking us down today, but has to come right back and work and then he will pick us up next weekend. Hopefully he will be able to come with us next year…

We stayed at my parent’s last night. Joey drove us to Orderville and then turned around and drove right back to Orem. He stopped and slept a little while but made it in the wee hours of the morning. He had a podcast to do this morning. The kids slept pretty good but woke early. They were so excited to be going out to Bull Rush. We helped Grandma run errands and pick up some things that she had forgotten to take. Everyone else was already out there. We waited for my brother, Clint to arrive from his scout campout so that he could come with us. Finally by late afternoon we were on our way – the kids could hardly stand it any longer. We got almost to the Bull Rush house and we met Grandpa with the Peterbilt, full of cows. The kids and I hopped aboard and made the trip with him to Sink Valley (our ranch). This was the 2nd of 6 loads to make. We got the cows out of the trailer and up the lane. The kids enjoyed riding the Gator to close the gate after the cows went through. Grandpa had to gas up so the kids played around the house for a bit and then we headed back. The kids loved riding in the big truck’s sleeper. We made it back to Bull Rush in time for Dutch Oven Potatoes for dinner.

The Peterbilt had some problems and Grandpa had to run back into town for some parts. So we got to hike around some canyons and visit with family! The best part of this annual trip for us is that the kids get to be with their cousins! Beth loves to be with Whitnee and they played pretty well together even though Whitnee is a couple of years older. And JJ just adores Austin. He is so good with the kids and takes really good care of JJ! Aunt Kori and I got to visit and take lots of pictures with our Nikon D40s. It was fun to share tips and just talk. After we hiked for awhile, we headed back to the house, where we just did NOTHING for the rest of the day!
