Life 2014 | Back to the Books

A new school year is upon us and I can’t believe its time to go back to school already.  I feel so unprepared, but I am looking forward to getting back to a regular routine and the new adventures that this school year brings to us!

J.J. has the amazing opportunity to go to a new school this year. Spectrum Academy has a brand new campus in Pleasant Grove and its all for kids on the Autism Spectrum.  I was so nervous about sending J.J. off to middle school (7th grade), but after he got accepted into SA, I was relieved. It is still a little nerve racking and I think it’s going to be a hard year, but much better now that I know he will be getting what he needs with the right teachers and programs. It’s all new for him with having a locker and going to different classes during the day. I hope he progresses this year. His new advisory teacher is Mr. Phelps and he seems like a great guy.

Beth is off to Spring Creek Elementary again as a 4th grader. She has Ms. Rossiter as her teacher and when she heard that her teacher is all about reading, art, and music – she was so excited!  All three of the things she really enjoys! I think its going to be a really fun year for her.

Family History TuesdayZ | School Days Success

Journal prompt: Tell about a great victory or personal success from your school days.

Journal prompt: Tell about a great victory or personal success from your school days.Journal prompt: Tell about a great victory or personal success from your school days.

Family History TuesdayZEach Tuesday, I am going to be offering prompts or ideas. If you don’t write in your journal regularly – I am going to encourage you to write just ONCE A WEEK and answer the question/idea that I give on Tuesdays. These ideas hopefully will spark a memory and you will be able to capture that in what you write/record so that it can be left for your children/grandchildren/family/friends. Give as much detail as you can when answering.

Will you do this for me? Will you do this for your families? You can write it down in a journal, you can type it up on a computer or journaling software, you can take a recorder and talk, you can videotape your answers, you can even scrap a page with the journaling. It doesn’t matter how you do this – it’s just important that you do it. The memories, the dates, the information is the only real thing we can leave to our families when we are gone.

My Journaling:
I grew up in a small town and my schools weren’t very far away at all – so I walked. We didn’t have a middle school/junior high – we just had the elementary school (Grades K-6) and the high school (Grades 7-12). The elementary school was just across town – only took me probably 5-10 minutes to walk there and the high school was even closer than that – happened to be right next door from my house. I loved that I only had to get up 15 minutes before getting to school. It never took me long to get ready and that really worked for me – since I was (and still am) a night owl and not a morning person!

Life 2012 | First Day of School

JJ and Beth are going to a new school this year.  The School District opened up a couple of new special classrooms for Autistic children and they moved JJ over to Orem Elementary. I was also able to get Beth in as well, so now they are both at the same school this year. I was also able to get Beth on the same bus as JJ, which just makes it easier. I hope they will both be able to adjust to a new schedule, make friends, and learn!

JJ is technically a 5th grader this year (although they have different age groups in his special classroom) and his new teacher is Mrs. Vitone. JJ has grown so much and I love that we are communicating so much better. He loves playing games on the computer, the Wii, apps on the iphone/ipad, and his Nintendo DS. He thrives on structure. He is starting to enjoy reading and he likes to help out around the house. He loves watching his dad on the computer and I can just see him growing up just like his daddy. JJ LOVES Agent P/Perry the Platypus, Phineas and Ferb and all superheroes. He likes to run and to draw. He’s always so busy and hardly ever sits/stands still. He really enjoys movies/tv and his favorite food is pizza. I love watching my JJ grow and use his imagination in all that he does.

Beth is in second grade this year and her teacher is Miss Funk. She loves reading, playing with friends, and doing crafts with her mom. She loves My Little Pony, Disney Princesses, and horses. She likes playing on the computer and playing soccer. She thrives on attention. She’s emotional and has a good heart. She has recently taken over washing dishes, because she knows her mother doesn’t like it and she finds enjoyment in it. Her favorite food is Ravioli and Potatoes, Ham & Cheese. I love my Bethie girl and I love seeing her learn and grow!

Family History TuesdayZ | Early School Memories

Journal prompt: What is the earliest memory you have about being in school?Journal prompt: What is the earliest memory you have about being in school?

My Journaling:
I remember bits and pieces of Kindergarten. I remember being so excited and nervous at the same time to go to school. I was sad because my best friends, Beverly and Misty were younger than me and that they weren’t going to get to go to school yet. I felt sad because I just knew that I was going to be missing out on our friendship and that they were going to have all kinds of adventures without me. I also remember feeling so grown-up.

kindergartendiploma
I still remember how the classroom and the playground at Valley Elementary in Orderville, Utah looked when I attended in 1984-85. I remember the large wooden cubbies that held all of our school stuff. I remember how exciting it was to have my own crayons and other supplies and even then, I liked to have everything in its place in my cubby. I remember the tables and I remember being so excited to see my name where I was supposed to sit. I remember a long shelf that surrounded the entire room, that later as we learned letters in the alphabet – we filled that shelf with blow-up Letters of the Alphabet. I remember being so excited about the beginning of each week to see what the next letter was going to be and I couldn’t wait to see what the blow-up letter looked like. I can still remember where the teacher’s desk was and I remember the play area had these large plastic bricks that we would build houses with. I remember the rug area where we would listen to stories and have naptime and snacktime. I loved it when the lunch ladies would bring in those little cartons of milk (I always had chocolate) for a snack. I remember playing with toys (especially My Little Ponies) outside the classroom (by the stairs, right by the door) at recess. I remember Mrs. Gehrig and what a great teacher she was. I always felt special when I was talking to her and somehow even today when I talk with her I feel like her student.

I suppose I don’t remember too many specifics about the Kindergarten that I attended, but I do remember more than I thought. I guess it is more impressions and feelings that I remember. I don’t remember too much about the people in my class at that point in our lives – though (being from a small community), most of those people were the ones I graduated with in 1997.
dede-kindergartenclass
It was interesting to me to have my son JJ go to preschool in my Kindergarten classroom in 2005 and 2006 – it felt and looked so different. As a kindergartener, it felt so big, but it seemed so small when I took JJ to school.

Life 2012 | Dr. Seuss Day

I have been seeing all sorts of fun ideas to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday (which was on Friday, March 2nd). I would see it, pin it, bookmark them, and then say “oh well, maybe next year.” But on Thursday night (March 1st), I realized that if I didn’t do anything, I would regret it. My kids love it when I make a big deal about things. I’ve been pretty lax this year with this kind of thing. I have just been in a funk and I’ve not really been that much fun to be around.

So Thursday night, I said, “Okay, I’m going to just do this and make this fun for the kids.” So last minute, I came up with a plan, got a few groceries on Friday afternoon and I made it happen. And I’m so glad I did, because I think these are the moments that my kids are going to remember. It wasn’t that hard to plan a special dinner and I had some fun discussions with the kids and you know – I just love Dr. Seuss and I love that my kids like his books too. The kids were so excited about the dinner and it just went well.

So our Dr. Seuss day actually started with the kids having a great time at school. I came up with a fun EASY hairdo for Beth – actually it came together accidentally, but it worked great and she was excited about it:

They both came home telling me about all the fun reading times, games, treats, and just fun activities that they had at school. Beth got to take her Sasha to school with her and she almost finished her book so she was thrilled. JJ got special treats and had people come read to them and they both just had a great time. So they were already excited about the day when they got home from school.

I met them with a fun after school snack – Cat in the Hat Kabobs! And yes, I saw it somewhere online and it was perfect because it was just strawberries and bananas on a stick! And the kids were delighted – Beth loves Strawberries, so she got more of them. JJ doesn’t like Strawberries, so he actually got more bananas and gave his strawberries to Beth. It’s actually kind of funny, because JJ loves the flavor of Strawberries, but he just can’t stand the texture or feel of them raw. Put them in a smoothie, a cheesecake, candy, etc. and he loves it – so its just a weird texture issue.

While they were eating their snack, we had our normal conversation about school and what was going on in their lives. They watched some tv, played on the DS, played with legos, etc.

Then for dinner, I made Green Eggs and Ham & Bacon (I just made scrambled eggs with bits of ham and bacon cooked right in – colored with food coloring) and I made a fun “Oh the Places You’ll Go” Pancake Mountain for each of them. And of course it was all drizzled in maple syrup. The kids got a huge kick out of the Pancake mountain, especially eating the teeny pancakes. Oh and we had Chocolate Milk too!

drseussdinnerdrseussdinner2Then of course we had to watch HORTON HEARS A WHO and have our dessert – Cat in the Hat Jello Snacks! Mine didn’t turn out perfect, but they tasted good!

So, I could have done a lot more. So many fun ideas out there, but at least I did something and my kids went to bed happy! All in All – a successful night!
