Family Tree TuesdayZ | BYU Family History Technology Apps

My daughter has been getting into family history lately and that excites me because that is about the age that I began being interested too. She’s started a project of collecting family stories and I think its going to be great fun to collaborate together and discover more about our genealogy! In this newly-found quest, my daughter found out about a local Family History Fair a few weeks ago and so we went and had a great time learning through some classes. One of the classes that I attended talked about some great family history apps from BYU, that make family history come alive for families! I’m so excited to share these with you today and I hope you will try them out with your families!

The Family History Technology Lab, sponsored by the Department of Computer Science at Brigham Young University, is the gateway to a variety of Family History Web Apps that are free and open to the public and used by hundreds of thousands of people around the world to help them with their family history. To use these apps you will need a username and password from **FamilySearch.org, (so you will need to signup and bring in your genealogy through the site) and then you can dig right in!

    • RelativeFinder | an app developed by BYU professors and students that connects individuals with famous historical figures, as well as friends and neighbors. It works through the FamilySearch API to identify common ancestors and show how two people are related. It also allows you to create your own groups so you can see how you might be related to a friend or a deceased person or even with people standing next to you by allowing RelativeFinder to use your location!

    • Virtual Pedigree | an app that quickly and dynamically navigates your family tree with both expandable and collapsible ancestry as well as descendancy. It uses BYU’s patented Elastic Paper technology to expand the entire tree with a simple single click and drag, whether exploring ancestors or descendants. It works especially well on tablets and smart phones by simply touching and dragging over the tree. You can view and navigate through hundreds of names, up and down the tree in a matter of seconds.

    • One Page Genealogy | an app that allows you to construct large pedigree charts with user-defined color and other attributes. It can create a custom tree, allowing 14-16 generations to be placed on a 2-3 foot wide format, something that is not possible with standard tree-charting applications. You can make charts from a tree in FamilySearch or from a Gedcom file.

    • Pedigree Pie | an app that provides a graphical pie-shaped representation of ancestors based on countries of origin and allows a user to quickly see what percent English, German, Swedish, etc, they are.

    • Descendancy Explorer | an app that members of the LDS church can use to quickly and easily find names of their ancestors that are ready to take to the temple.

    • Geneopardy | a game app that is based on the well-known game of Jeopardy. It is great for family gatherings and a fun way for children and adults to get to know their ancestors better!

    • Wheel of Family Fortune | a game app that is based on the well-known game of Wheel of Fortune, but with hints and names drawn from your own family tree. A great way to engage family members, old and young, in family history!

    • And more to come! So check back to see what other apps are being developed!

Aren’t these so much fun! I’m so excited to explore these apps and get my family excited about learning about where they came from and why they are, who they are! So try them out and come back and tell me what you think!

** I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS or Mormon), which has created FamilySearch. But even if you aren’t a member of my church, please check it out – it is an amazing site that helps families connect with all generations!

Life 365 | Week 49

We traveled home today and the kids got to skip school. Cleaning and doing laundry and trying to get organized for the following week!

The kids were excited to go back to school today. They love wearing their warm coats and boots to school – having snow is exciting.

The kids were so excited to start our Countdown to Christmas Advent Calendar. I created a new one this year and was so happy with how it turned out. I used a shoe organizer (that has exactly 24 holes – how perfect is that) – and created some date pages to put on the outside and used some fancy clothespins. In each hole – is a card with an activity on it! Today’s activity was to decorate the tree – so we brought the tree in and decorated while listening to Christmas music.

Today’s activity was to drink hot chocolate by the tree. The kids thought it was so much fun!

I was so excited for tonight’s activity. The kids got home from school and were surprised to see Cody, Becki and Mallory there. I had them read the card in our advent calendar – and surprise – we are heading on vacation to Eden with Cody and Becki! They were thrilled to be able to go back to our “vacation home”! So a few hours later, we arrived at Worldmark. We were able to get a 3-bedroom condo this time and it was fancy! We loved it! So we all settled in – decorated our little tree – went grocery shopping, and ate pizza for dinner. We are all so excited to have this special time together.

It was such a fun day. We did crafts, played the wii, played some card games, ate great food, and just had such a great time relaxing and enjoying being together. We topped the night off by heading to Eden’s Town Tree Lighting where the kids got to see Santa!

We are having such a lovely time and we are thinking of making this a yearly tradition! It was Mallory’s very first birthday today and we are so happy that we were able to celebrate with her. We had cupcakes and dinner and present opening! The kids watched Christmas movies all day and just another great day of being together! Happy Birthday Mallory – we love you!

Project 365 | Week 40

Monday, September 29, 2009
sep28Beth was such a good girl today. She was my little helper and since I couldn’t carry things since I had to use crutches, she helped me do laundry and dishes. I am so grateful that my kids are old enough to be independent and able to help me as I just feel so helpless right now. I’m also so grateful to Cody for his help picking Beth up from school! I couldn’t do this without the help I’m getting from my family!

sep30Joey’s parents came up today and took our car to get it fixed. We haven’t been able to use the car for over a year and it isn’t even licensed, so we are so grateful that they were able to come up and get it. Our parking space looks so bare now since Joey’s car is gone and we moved the van over to the guest parking until we can get it to my Dad to fix it. I’m so grateful to Pete for letting us use his car for awhile and for all the help our parents are giving us. I think this trial is definitely teaching me patience and to be humble.

sep29Quite the storm we had last night – lots of wind! And we had another huge branch of the tree fall on our trailer. It even woke the kids up.

Thursday, October 1, 2009
oct1JJ was so excited to finally get to wear his Spiderman shirt to school. The weather has turned cooler this week so we are pulling out some of the long-sleeve shirts and this is JJ’s new favorite shirt. Thursdays are always fun days as it is PIZZA DAY at JJ’s school and that is his favorite food – you can even see some of the sauce still on his face!

Friday, October 2, 2009
oct2Beth loves to stack up her toys when she is playing. I loved her little circle of Disney Princesses and My Little Ponies. I was playing with her the best I could – since I couldn’t get down on the floor with her with my hurt foot. Joey’s dad got our car fixed, so Joey hitched a ride to St. George with Clark and brought the car back up today. He got back way early in the morning but its good to have our car back.

Saturday, October 3, 2009

We listed to General Conference today and we also returned Pete’s car. We just hung out together as a family and when Joey saw that CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS was playing we decided to head to the movie very last minute. It was a fun way to spend an evening and a cute movie!

Sunday, October 4, 2009

It was nice to just stay in our pajamas today and watch General Conference. It is so nice to be spiritually uplifted by hearing from the prophet and the apostles. In between sessions we whipped up a batch of Ghost Pancakes! The kids thought it was so much fun!
